You're Rich!

Updated: Sep 17

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” -1 Timothy 6:17-19

You likely have someone else in mind when you hear the word rich. It’s usually a person who has more than you do, but there are so many people who would love to be in your situation and they would say you are rich! So, congratulations on being rich!

The Bible speaks to the rich and commands the rich not to be arrogant which can be a natural response when you have more than others! You may become arrogant by subconsciously thinking you are better because you have more, you think you worked harder, you believe you made better choices, or whatever other reasons you may point to as why you have more. However, every decision and every ounce of effort was only made possible because God gave you life and without Him you are “wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked” (Revelation 3:17).

Wealth is a terrible place to put your hope as it can be reduced and taken away so quickly through loss, theft, world economic changes, or decisions made by you, your heirs, or those you have trusted to manage your wealth. Wealth, like life, is very unpredictable and uncertain.

There is a more certain foundation to build your life on than wealth! God provides greater security and higher returns than wealth! When you place your true hope in Jesus, He can help you become rich in contentment (Philippians 4:12), rich in generosity, rich in the Spirit, rich in faith, hope, and love!

Wealth is a great tool that can provide life essentials for your family, open up possibilities and options you wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise, while also making life more comfortable. However, you were made for more than comfort! There is so much good you can do in the world to share the Gospel, build up the Church, and help those in need when you become rich toward God. A liability greater than debt is when money becomes your master and you are not rich toward God (Luke 12:20-21).

When you trust in God and not money, you learn that He is your great Provider! The Lord provides so richly for your enjoyment (v.17) because He loves and cares for you! Put Jesus first in your life and first in your finances so you can see the deeper peace and blessing of God that money can never provide!

Right on?

Read/listen to 1 Timothy chapters 5-6 and 2 Timothy chapter 1

Prayer focus: talk to God about any ways you may have put your hope in wealth in the past and tell Him how you want to instead put your hope in Him as your Provider
