“Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say: ‘You are just in these judgments, O Holy One, you who are and who were; for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets, and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.’ And I heard the altar respond: ‘Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.’” -Revelation 16:5-7
Not thinking or talking about hell and God’s wrath in the short term may seem more convenient, but it’s a disservice to not warn people from pending consequences. The Bible is very clear that there will be eternal punishment for everyone who has not placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!
God’s wrath was poured out on Jesus, who paid the price for our sins! He willingly paid that price for all who would receive His payment in their place! Some people, however, will refuse the offer and will experience the penalty for their sins for all eternity in hell.
Eternal punishment may seem harsh through our dirty lens of a sin stained world where we all have sinned. However, from the standpoint of a holy and perfectly just God, His judgements are just and true (v.7).
To love people well, we need to tell them about God‘s amazing grace, and the eternal consequences for those who refuse that grace! It’s not unloving to talk about the hard things! It’s actually more loving to warn a perishing world of future consequences if they do not repent!
Thankfully, God generously gave His Son so that whoever believes in Jesus should not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). Point people to the love and grace of God, but remember that grace is so amazing because of what we are rescued from in hell. Praise God for His amazing grace!
Right on?
Read/listen to Revelation chapters 14-16
Prayer focus: thank God for His amazing grace and for rescuing us from hell while asking for courage to talk about hard things like this with others
